Orbulina universa
Life: O. universa is a surface dwelling symbiont bearing spinose foraminifera. This species is abundant in temperate waters of the modern ocean. Distinguishing features: This species has a single spherical chamber covering the earlier shell. This species is unique in that it lacks a true aperture. Typical adult size >250 microns. There is 1 scanned O. universa shell. This specimens was obtained from a plankton tow near Newport, Oregon in October 2019. Because it was alive at the time of capture, some remnant cytoplasm remains inside the shell and can be seen in the 3D model. The model was generated as a substack of the whole object in order to highlight the juvenile whorl that is rarely preserved in seafloor specimens.
